In The Cleft of the Rock

And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: Exodus 33: 21-22

As a young teenager I volunteered at my local hospital and nursing home as a Candy Striper.  My duties were to aide the nurses in whatever they needed.  Usually, in the evenings I would roll a snack cart to each room providing snacks and conversation for each patient.  Occasionally, a nurse would give me a task well beyond my ability.  One such time was a man in a full leg cast.  My assignment was to wheel this poor man from the third floor to the first for x-rays.  I can assure you that I managed to bump him into every wall, corner and elevator. The only thing I did not do was crush his leg between the opening and closing of the elevator door.

My favorite times as a Candy Striper were spent at the nursing home.  My duties were to either feed the patients their dinner or wheel them up and down the hallway.  These hallways were much larger allowing for my wheelchair maneuvering to be done with smoothness and grace.  Some patients were very quiet, while others were more vocal.  Then there was Daisy.  Daisy was the sweetest patient of all.  She loved to be wheeled up and down the halls singing “Rock of Ages Cleft for Me”… “Rock of ages cleft for me, let me hide myself in Thee.”

Moses was literally put in the cleft of the rock by God.  God’s glory was about to pass over him.  God knew Moses needed His protection and gently placed His hand over him to protect him.  As Christians, we should never want to stray far from the “cleft of the rock”…being in God’s presence…having His protection upon us.  In His presence, under His protection standing in the cleft of the rock, you and I are able to be salt and light to this world and not be shaken or swayed.

Daisy had trouble with her memory in her lateness of life however, she knew clearly where she stood…in the cleft of God’s Rock.  God bless you Daisy, till we meet again.
