God and the Big Fish

It was Sunday night and no one knew how things would turn out.  All eyes were on the children, waiting for them to perform.  Would they rise to the occasion?  Had we prayed enough?  Would God allow this, or were we to fall short of His glory.

Three weeks prior to this evening we started rehearsals.  The Children’s Church was to perform a skit about “God’s Creation.”  The only speaking part for the little children was one word per child as the older kids were doing the narration.  The rehearsals each week at times became hectic and wearisome as we tried to coordinate each part.  In due time the skit started to come together.

The big day arrived, morning rehearsal went as well as could be expected.  Only one big problem; my 4 year old son refused to say his one word.  Fish, that’s all he had to say…Fish!  He was determined, as only a four year old can, to hold onto his word and never bring it to light.  I begged, pleaded and bribed.  He dug his feet in deeper and became totally unmovable. I knew I just wasn’t able to convince him to say that one word: fish. However, I knew that God could place a desire in his heart to do the right thing.

The moment was here.  The lights were lowered and the congregation and guests where ushered to their seats.  The narration began and the children, each with their props walked onto the stage and called out their one word.  My son’s time came; he carried his prop, walked to his spot and with a resounding voice Fish! carried through the air to my ears like music!  Later the children all returned to the stage to end the skit with the song “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.”

My son jumped off the stage and into my arms yelling, “I did it Mommy, I did it!!”  Looking into his beaming face, I was once again humbled at what God accomplishes for His glory.  God did what I wasn’t able to do and He was glorified.  I knew God had been faithful…He loves us, cares for us and about us, even the fishes too.
